Lighting is an important element of an ergonomic office. Natural daylight, possibly diffuse, will be the best. Workers feel secure, more lively and willing to work in a natural, full daylight office. During early morning, afternoon and evening hours you should use appropriate artificial light - general and local lighting. Fluorescent lamps work well as general lighting. It is ideal when they have a high factor of developing colours (they will give the light of a spectrum and characteristics much closer to daylight). General lighting, for example, in the form of a desk lamp is useful when you do precise operations. The lamp should be mounted at the worker side so that the light does not dazzle your eyes (a beam of light falling directly on the monitor as well as the reflected – e.g. on the monitor). In case of the right handed you should put the lamp at the left side, but in case of the left handed – at the right side of the desk. As a desk lamp, it is worth choosing a halogen lamp, giving bright light of a nice, warm colour. Chair adjustment An office chair should be swiveling and have a possibility of adjusting the height of a seat, the angle of a back rest, an armrest and castors. It is important, if you are able to regulate the seat on a sitting position. The height and the angle of a back rest should be also regulated. Chairs and office chairs should be stable of 5 supports. They cannot have any mounting clearence, and should not jam in any position. Workstation arrangement Computer workstation arrangement should allow to concentrate. The workstation should be in a separate room or have own section. There should be enough place for office equipment and accessories on the desk . Objects and paper documents have to be kept within easy reach. Monitor adjustment The selection of monitor and its position has crucial influence on your comfort and convenience. The monitor should be placed directly in front of the user, approximately within the distance of 40 cm, below sight level. Older monitors of the CRT type, should be equipped with a right filter or covered with antireflective layer. It is worth remembering, that the monitor stand should be illuminated with artificial light of 300lx at least. You should definitely avoid reflections of light on your computer monitor screen. Keyboard Keyboard should be placed at least 10 cm from the edge of the desk, so that the employee can rest hands comfortably on the desktop or a special wrist pad. The keyboard should be situated centrally at the elbow level or slightly lower. While typing, an angle between arm and forearm should be 100-110 degrees. Wrists should be kept on a special pad or alternatively on the edge of the desk. Air and silence Computers, especially accumulated on a small area produce negative effect on air quality. To guarantee the employees with best conditions, the office should be regularly ventilated. The temperature in rooms where work is carried out cannot be lower than 18 degrees, and air humidity should be kept at a minimum level of 40% (in winter humidifiers can be used). Noise distracts and reduces mental fitness of employees. According to Polish norms, permissible noise intensity in office space should be 55-65 decibels maximum. Noise can be reduced in the office by means of assembly of right windows and laying out walls and ceilings with soundproof materials. Workstations should be arranged in a way that sounds created at one workstation do not reduce the comfort of work at the other.
